Is getting ahold of Factory Mk1 or Mk2 GTD Intercooler / intake setups in the U.S. Impossible or insanley expensive??
I have seen one in the U.S. thus far... Just wondering if I should just plan on having to fabricate intake / intercooling plumbing?

if you find it it will be in europe or somewhere where the GTD was offered. try german ebay and sites like that.

I got the cooler and hoses from a dude in England, but its harder to find the plastic bits to hold it all together. when I get round toit, plan is to make shrouds out of cardboard, then 'glass em.
Not much more work to go custom all the way and use a saab900 cooler in the same spot. If your planning on a scoop, then maybe a ford Tbird cooler, they have a wide flange around them to seal under a hood scoop.
I have seen the GTD coolers go cheap on ebay.de, but no-one has ever replied to my question if they are willing to ship to NA.
Hey, guys over in europe? start collecting GTD parts at the wreckers, there is a market for it over here! Charge coolers and related parts, the water cooled turbos, auxiliary water pumps. You find 'em I am sure someone on the board will buy 'em.
hmmm, we're going to jolly ol England inthe spring, wonder if the wife and kids want to skip the tourist stuff and go to the wrecking yards!?

Thanks for the tip, I see some MkII stuff at least on ebay.de currently a couple of complete looking setups even but, nothing shipping to NA, mostly Europe or Germany. I have someone in Holland I can have stuff shipped to.
Cheap MkII Setup <-- DROOL!
LeeG
GOOD Idea!! does seem like they go pretty cheap, a GTD Forum member in Germany could make a few Euros buying complete setups and flipping them to members in the U.S. or maybe make a % on handling the money and the forwarding of the parts. I am sure something could be figured out, it is 2006 after all and we do have the internet now.
or we could setup a GTD Free Trade Zone where we trade in parts that weren't available in the U.S. for parts that were available in Germany and vice versa. Like..... ummm... lemme see.....
I KNOW!!! Westmoreland Mk1 Square headlight Conversions!!

There is no Mk1 factory intercooler setup.
And the Mk2 one.. it's not GTD exclusive either.

Again HP, Good Info!! Thanks!
For some reason I thought teh Mk1 GTD's were factory Intercooled.
So basically the intercooler setups of Mk2's regaurdless of engine are the same?
Is the Air box the same as the N/A or non Intercooled cars??

I believe the air filter box is the same, yes.
About "GTD engines".. there are no "GTD engines" at all! That's a North American myth!
There are RA/SB engines, JR/MF,.. RA or SB engines feature stock IC (the same IC in every engine), the others do not.
This issues have nothing to do with the car being a GTD or a CL or a GL or whatever...

The stock euro intercooler setups aren't really worth it guys. Makes much more sense to make custom charge piping with a good front mount crossflow intercooler. You would likely spend less money this way and it would be signifagntly more effecient.
But if you are going for an OEM theme than I suppose this is what you would want.

I have also questioned and explained that in topic about GTD nozzles....
I would agree with 953racer, I have no intercooler and I was challenged to buy stock setup, it would cost me around 100$, but it is not worth it...

Performance wise, yes. Bolt on installation no.
Although my bits will be far from bolt on anyway, since I have to make a way to mount the IC and get air to it.

It's a bolt on if you pay someone to fab it

Honestly though fabbing charge piping and mounting an IC is cheap and easy.

Just to add my 2p, I'd do a DIY intercooler setup tbh, as it's probably a darn sight easier, cheaper and more effective!
Mk2 GTDs are difficult to come by in the UK, and good ones are as rare as rocking horse poo. Add to that, that the factory intercooler setup seems slightly strange to me. It's face up under the bonnet, and the air supply to it seems rather limited, indeed, I'm going to be either improving the airflow, or re-locating it in the long run.
Still, if you're after anything specific, I can keep my eye out for you.
Cheers,
Tom

Do you have any data on the relative efficiency og the GTD intercooler? I bought one to go on my mk2 Passat(Quantum). People are saying its not very good because its reflex and not a'through put'. But I've looked at pictures of some of these fancy fabricated i/c s and I find that some of the input chambers cannot be directing the airflow evenly across the cooling fins. Looking at the angled pipework on the GTD; it appears to use all the cooling tubes evenly before cleverly squeezing the air back across the returns.

Hi Mark, I'm afraid I don't have any data relating to how efficient the intercooler is, I'm just going by how the cooling airflow is directed across the surface in the Golf.
The few facts that I'm in possession of are merely to do with the relative hp outputs of the intercooled engine vs. non-intercooled. As it adds 33% (80HP over the stock 60 of the umwelt) I guess VW must have set it up pretty well though.
I just can't resist tinkering :-)
IIRC from my Passat owning days, it should be relatively easy to mount in a similar position to that of the Golf, and get the airflow routed up from somewhere underneath the slam panel.
Cheers,
Tom

Not 60hp to 80 but 70hp to 80, TomB :!:
