Potential causes of difficulty starting when cold

I'm going to go look at an '81 Datsun Diesel Pickup that has problems starting when cold.
What are the potential causes of that?
What can I look for to make sure it's not something major?

I'd imagine it would be similar to any diesel, bad glows (and curcuit), low compression, incorrect timing, too thick of oil, bad starter...

I think it was just the valve guides
It was only $800, 218k miles, a little rust
With a rebuild it would be going real nice
