Woot woot! Free 1.9 aaz FOR ME
« on: October 26, 2006, 05:57:36 am »
I lowballed a guy on a 94 golf he has for sale, I told him I couldn't offer him much because I just wanted the engine. He says "well, if you just want an engine I have a 94 Jetta diesel engine taking up space in my shed, and I REALLY need to get rid of it."

HA! picking it upo tonight! Even if it has a piston hanging out the side, I'll be able to pull some decent parts.

If it's a good runner, I'll  give it a quick going over with new gaskets & seals and either throw it in my samurai or sell it in the US.

yes.

I have a knack for landing things like this, but it always ends up hurting when I sneak engines & parts into the garage. Wifey goes to take out the recycling and says "hey, where the hell did all these engines come from??"

I had a Porsche 911T engine that I scored for $200, my wife found it under the stairs, wrapped in garbage bags. She's onto me, boys!!

How'd you get her to take out the recycling??

That's good that you can get those deals though. You just need to find better hiding spots.

Yep, I need a "skunkworks". Actually, she's pretty tolerant... she hasn't been able to park in the garage since March.

I actually have a line on a spare 1.9 in Halifax too... if I can't jump on i, do you want it? I think he wants ~$200.

PM me with the details of the engine....mileage etc. Thanks.

Since March? That's not too bad. Mind you, she doesn't need to park in there in the spring and summer and fall. You've got a few weeks before the snow flies (hopefully).

Dangnabbit, it was a 1.6td. I grabbed it anyway, seeing as how it was free. Guy was kind of a bull***ter, kept telling me they are exactly the same engine, yadda yadda.

He also has a 94 golf. I asked him about the crank, because he said the crank bolt had been fixed. When pressed for detail, he said "they used a special metal spray to build it up, then machined it." Sounds an aweful lot like magic to me.

As for the 911T engine, that was a score for sure. It had a spun conrod bearing, but still had tons of good stuff I sold on Pelicanparts & ebay. I still have the magnesium case, no one seems to want it.

ya know...the local shop with a good reputation told me the same thing about the spray metal. I was the same as you. But seeing as how I have 2 cranks I might have it done. Thats how he said they do all of their crank fixes.

The metal spray is legit, its kind of like a welding process, don't know why the technical name isn't comming to mind right now, I'm sure Brett will chime in. Anyways I used it to repair a couple teeth on a flywheel on an old detroit 2 stroke diesel gen set one time, its still holding, its weird stuff.

Oh and as for the old magnesium block, when I was working in a vw/porsche shop I used to grab all those blown 2.7 911 magnesium blocks and old vw bug blocks and have hectic bonfire parties with them on the weekends... Hella bright and they burn pretty good once you get them going, and theres no real good way of putting them out either, always seemed like a good idea friday after work after a few brews though :?  8)

yea we used to toss VW blocks on the fire when out riding Quads in the desert. Problem is its like looking at a huge ARC welding Arc. The rangers down there didnt like it. Might as well had a huge spot light out there since it looked like the sun had landed.

Good times.
