let me take the first crack at this one.

YES.

if you have $$$ then it will be no problem. simple mods will get you up to 100 hp quite easily.

I believe 'simple mods' is dissected in the FAQ/Technical forum. See the "How to make your....faster" threads.

To answer the topic title, yes 150hp is possible. I've exceeded both 150bhp and 150whp smoke-free with a 1.6TD, with lots left (needed an intercooler and more fuel). A ported 1.9TD head was used to help with airflow.. an unmodified 1.6TD head might be a squeeze for 150hp.

Bigger pump, 10mm at least, bigger turbo, good intercooler and 2,5" exhaust is all you need for 150hp.

K24 or Garrett T3 should be OK to the task, shouldn't they?

It is possible, but you are pushing it to limits. Not very good.

my tdi-m runs low 14 1/4 mile times,and i dont think IT has 150hp
maybe close,,but the torque is the real thriller
my buddie therabbittree thinks i have like 225 ft pounds maybe
i really dont know
but i know it likes to eat gearboxes
Throttle cables ftw

Well he asked about HP, he didn't ask about durability...One guy here drowe, I think high 14 in 1/4 mile, with his 1.6 TD rabbit, but he granaded two engines....

yea a tdi will do that day in day out.....without blowing up
the big limit on the idi engines is all that heat is trapped in the head, its a killer on the prechambers, they will crack+stuff eventually
Throttle cables ftw

i would go the route that you are basically talking about, put the 1.9 head on a 1.6 block, then use a gasser turbo exhaust manifold with your turbo, which will allow enough room to use the gasser intake manifold, i think this would provide some good flow, not as good as the manifolds 935 racer is baking up right now, but definetly a big step above stock, and actually this is the setup i am thinking about running, accept probably not a 1.9 head, i'll just send my 1.6 head in and get the *** ported out of it haha.  but yeah good luck with what ever you do

It seems that 1.9 head is the way to go, but I don't recall that anyone here has posted compression test...I believe that cold start would be a big issue....
