going to replace valve stem seals - special tools?

I'm going to replace my valve stem seals and wonder if anyone knows anything about the two special tools you need for this job.  Firstly, the valve spring compressor -will any valve spring compressor work or do I need to get a particular type.  Secondly, the pushing tool to instal the valve stem seals.  I see this is a vw special tool.  It looks like something I could make myself.  Has anyone ever made a tool like this to push the new stem seals over the valve stems?
BTW the car is an 88 Jetta Turbo Diesel
