« on: October 17, 2006, 09:05:22 am »
Those of you running a TDI mechanical setup what Timing belt do you use, the TDI belt or the IDI belt??

I will be using the TDI with IDI brackets and pump mounting

Thanks guys

yep
use a tdi belt
i run the rabbit injector/motor mount bracket myself(idi)
and i run an old style timing belt tensioner(idi)
the studs are different for auto tensioner(tdi)+the old manual one(idi),so use the proper stud

i was thinking about using the auto tensioner but you have to do a few things for it to be right,IMO:
you have to use the tdi injector pump bracket+use an old rabbit gas engine motor mount
and you need the little roller on the newer style pump bracket too
basically "keep the old with the old" and the new with the new
most of the time this is hilfolk'r... ive forgotten my password

Justin,

All the TDI stuff can be used. I was able to use it on mine as well as the serpentine drive for the accessories. Utilizing the auto tensioner required modification of the diesel style mount which didn't take too much. If you'd like pics, i have some here somewhere. The gasser mounted can't be easily used without using the gasser style accessory bracket or making a spacer because the gas mount does not flush to the block like the older style 1.6 IP bracket does. It "raises" at the front of the block.
You have to cut some extra out of the timing belt backing plate so that it clear the mount *once its modified, which is simply cutting and smoothing it* but then you have the hole in that cover to use the auto tensioner and it'll mount up fine. The TDI IP bracket then has the extra deflector pulley on it that can be used too. I used it, along with the stock serp stuff (converted to non a/c or p/s, very simple) and the timing belt adjustment and accessory belt changes are as smooth as silk. I'll post pictures here later tonight after I get home from grad school .  Bunny is getting ready to go away for winter so I can do further upgrades to the already crazy engine....and finally PAINT :)

Maybe some now ... let me know if you have any questions
This is with the TDI belt, tensioner, etc.

thanks guys, I will be using the old style since I dont have the new mounts. I figured it would be best to use the TDI belt for the higher injection pump pressures.

oh and one more question what do you set the breaking pressure to on your injectors?

Actually, the 1.9TD (AAZ) Takes the same belt as the early TDI (1Z/AHU). You do have to use a belt from a 1.9 engine though, it's 2 teeth longer than the 1.6 belt.

Sounds good...either way will work. You def. do want the longer T belt as mentioned though... as the TDI block and AAZ block are about 18-20mm taller than the older 1.6 blocks... as was said in the last post :)

My injectors are at stock breaking pressures at the moment...but that will change this winter when I have more time to mess with things as well as changing over to R520's to really make things interesting :)

220 bar is 3234 psi and my injectors said 220 / 300 bar. I swapped in the stage 3 TD tuning nozzles and breaking pressure was right at 220 bar so I figured thats what the injector spec was.

2700 psi is like 184 bar and 2900 is like 197 bar
