glow plug testing - AAZ
« on: October 05, 2006, 10:12:53 am »
Hi,

I'm sure this is buried in the archive somewhere but I couldn't find it.
How do I test the glowplugs?
It's taking a bit to get started on cold mornings and smokes like crazy when first started.

Figure it must be the glow plugs or the perhaps the relay but as I don't have the Bentley Manual yet I'm not sure how to test for the fault.

Any help much appreciated.

I've always found the easiest thing was to pull the injectors and watch the plugs heat up through the hole when someone turns on the ignition.

I hate fiddling around with the little nuts behind the fuel pump holding the glow plug harness on, and I never had a big enough ammeter to measure the draw on the circuit to test them properly.

$2.00 of new heat shields to go under the injectors afterwards, 10 minutes to pull injectors and re-install, + time to swap out dead plugs.
