Fram Air hog? opinion/experience
« on: October 03, 2006, 09:55:52 am »
Hey! anyone have any opinion
on these high flow airfilters by Fram. :?: ..
they are half the price of the competitors.
they appear to be similiar in construction..
I figured...  that Fram can afford to sell
them at the reduced price... being that
they sell many other productss....... not
to say that I use any of there products...
which I don't but, these filters may be
the first.....
what is the poll on these ???

haha fram is more or less the ***tiest filter you can get, if you wanna go with something better, on a turbo diesel it's pretty easy to buy a cone filter from like auto zone or something and get a 2.75" piece of exhaust and then have a cone filter, makes a tad of difference nothing too exciting.  unless you have a mk2, if you have a mk2 i would keep the stock air box as it draws outside air from the fender well.  if you're using a stock intake box, or you have an n/a motor, i highly suggest going to napa and getting a GOLD filter for a 1993 yj i think the cherokees also used that filter, anyways it's a perfect fit for a turbo diesel, and is better than the one napa has listed for the turbo diesels, it is much thicker and has alot more element to it.  Now the reason i say to go to napa, is not because i work there, but because napa carries WIX filters, which are some of the best in the world for flow and filtering.  remember to get the gold line of filter not the silver

Fram wanks huh......
 yeah, here is my scenario.....
the pup is a 1.6l (naturally asthmatic).
I got some scoot out of it by wipping
on a header with a 2.25 exhaust......
so I am looking for high flow........(as far as asthmatics go.)
so that is why I was looking at high flow filters......
and then I was planning on enlarging the air inlet to
3" on the filter box... I can see your point with a turbo
fram filters don't hold up...
WIx gold huh....

they're reboxed as napa gold, but as long as you say a gold filter for a 94 or w/e year yj jeep they'll know what you mean. also, you said about enlarging the inlet size, i highly recommend this, it is very restrictive, alot of the reason for this is to reduce noise, if you put a header and a big exhaust on you obviously don't care about noise haha, my car with a 2.25 and a 2" downpipe and stock manifold was loud enough for my taste, way loud.  anyways, definetly make the inlet bigger and route it to be sucking air in from outside of the engine, this makes a difference on gassers, but it makes a world of difference to a diesel. if you're on a quest for even more power try turning up the main fuel screw on the back of injector pump some until it smokes at a point you can deal with, you don't wanna get too out of hand, but you know, more power is always better haha.  good luck, report back i wanna hear how all this works out and stuff.

OK, So I say  "gold filter for a 94 or w/e year yj jeep."
      umm, for a 94 what   :P  :?
Yeah, I got a place the does NAPA schtuff I can hit tomorrow.
Yeah I am gonna gett some 3" pvc electrician conduit.....
I think ... and re-engineer the cold air box.....
Do you think if I run it out the pre-existing fender
hole this will be sufficient :?:  I was also thinking
of insulating this pipe after I get it in...... maybe
that header heat shield tape schtufff....
Yeah, I like the the screw idea...
umm, She probably could handle it eh
with the header and all...............
I unfortunately  choked her out a little....
I did a 2.25  exhaust... initially with
just a flow master in the back......
sounded like a weed wacker.......
So i got from this place called
"heart throb"... it is a .commer
thinkit is   heartthrowexhaust.com
some aluminized perforated resonators......
I put one on.... no loss in hp
so at this point 2.25 flowmaster
and and 2.25 18" res.............
I still felt it was too loud...
I have some thing called (tinitus) :x  :x
so I am really sensitive to sound.........
So I slapped another one on......
so now 18" res another 18" res and flowmaster...
STEPPING aside.....
How much of a differance do you think
mandel bends make...... I have two
90 turns there near the rear axle.......
Is it worth throwing in two madrel 90's.
And should I just dump this system...
the reses and the flowmaster........
I heard one guy saying just throw
on a couple straight through mufflers(resonators).
Am I losing quite abit of ponies.....
in the flowmaster(deflection chamber) :?:
Whadaya tink
