Gonna remove AC compressor
« on: October 03, 2006, 09:37:58 am »
Hello,
  Gonna remove AC compressor....
It doesn't work anymore...... motor
mounts were bad.... in car.... looks
like it caused one of the lines to snap
off the compressor.... SO OUT IT GOES...
Anyway, I was wondering about the alternator
belt....... I guess will drive it off the power
steering pump.... or move it down to where
the compressor used to be..... Anybody out
there go through this mod? It is on a 91 Jetta 1.6(NA).
So a little insight goes a long way.. That is why I am
posting this one...
And If you can throw me a proper belt size....
(part# would be great) so I don't have to go
to the parts store after car is apart)

if you could find a car without a/c, you could just swap the parts out (and the lower amp alternator too for less load draw giving you slight better accel and performance...)

a/c = 90 amp
w/o a/c = 56 amp or something near that.

Yeah, I like that idea......
rather that have that ridiculous long belt........
which will probably stretch muchly. slip helaciously.....
So a car without ac...... or non-ac brackets.
Is the body the same on the alternators......
so I can use the same one?
Meaning bolt the 90 amp alt in a non-ac situation....

not sure about that... 90 amp should work with non a/c bracket.

My ac compressor broke down and now i'm gonna throw it away. Gonna use tdi pulley on the waterpump. Tdi fanbelt. Seems like the way to go, instead of investing in new alternator and stuff needed to hold it in place (mounting bracket???? dunno the right word...)

Oh, maybe you have old style belt, or? ac should run with wide belt? but not sure if alternator does...

Dont think the alternator from non ac is same as ac.

your right the alternator from non ac is approximately 56amps, whereas a/c is 90 amps (obviously to accommodate the rad fan, blower fan + a/c clutch etc)

i'm still considering dishing out like.. 500 bucks on the serpentine belt conversion kit...

Hummm,
I just want a few more "pony powers"
get rid of that useless apendix(compressor)
Sounds like it is an issue.... the altenator......
more windings in the 90 amp.. so its bigger?
I think I would like to keep the big lug... 90 amp'er.
Maybe for now it is run a big belt....
this ac unit really blow chow.... the clutches
chatter all the time... I bet I get aleast 6
or 7 pony powers out of it amputation......
(10 ponies = 1 horse).
So tell me about a serpentine conversion kit?
what is the cost>>>
it is a belt new pullies.......  IF you could
describe.....  and what kind of gains can
you get.... Is it less resistance........
so maybe a couple ponies worth????? :?

serp conversion kit is pretty much just to relieve the hassles of troublesome v-belts.

the only thing that concerns me, is that if I have the power steering pump, or any other accessory start to shift, then it would wear down the belt, and if the main belt goes... i would be SOL...  then again all my pulleys seem to be running straight and true.   I even had to spray some belt dressing on my alt / a/c belt to stop some belt slippage when the a/c was on.

here's a picture of the kit, and a link to the vendor below.  Seems pretty good quality to me, and worth it.   It says it has pulleys for P/S, Alt, Water pump and A/C, but I only see 3 pulleys...  Hrmmm would need to ask about that!  oh forgot to mention that it comes with a brand new 90 amp alternator... which in itself is worth around $200.

Cool. i booked mark the site....
Yeah, moral of the story is
I guess always try to be
prepared for the worst..
hope for the best.........
in terms of the one belt
goes.... guess having a spare..
in the back with the tools helps...
Ilike the idea.... it is cleaner looking..
for sure.........
Do you know what one of those
smaller alts cost.... 50 buck? maybe...

I deleted A/C from my 1990 Jetta. Here's what I did.

Removed the compressor, and the compressor mounting bracket. I got rid of the 90 amp AC alternator. Bought a 65 amp Bosch alternator with pulley from a website that was designed for the car's w/o A/C of the same year. You'll hae to fabricate a bracket to tension the belt, and this can be a pain. I used the bolt that went through the A/C compressor with a big nut as a washer / spacer, and hooked a slotted bracket from an A1 to it. I have to use a breaker bar or huge persuader to tension the belt, but once its on, it stays.

The 65 amp alternator I bought had the 3 prong plug instead of the lug and small wire, so I just ripped the harness off of an A1 and adapted it. Worked great. The pulley was the right diameter and length to line up with where the A/C compressor belt used to go. The belt for non A/C cars is slightly wider than a normal alternator belt to compensate for the wider pulley's on the inside.

To Coke: I too would love to ditch my heavy and useless A/C compressor, along with all the plumbing and whatnot. Can we see a pic?? I have a 92 Jetta TD. Lighter is better, plus more room for an FMIC maybe...

To monst: Are you going to delete all the plumbing, condensor, radiator, etc. as well? Does one need to be concerned about releasing refigerant gas during this process? Keep us up to date..

I would say yes....
one should not release r-11 to
burn more holes...... I would
ask around and see about. someone
evacing it for you...... my system is
shot...... one of the line on the compressor
actually broke off.... Due toasted motor mounts...
So no need to evac for me..... Maybe even
try a junk yard.. for evacuting the system.... 8)
