I want to start playing now.

I'm starting to build up the nerve to start adjusting the pump on my 1.6TD. Now, I'm still running a stock exhaust, and I dont have an EGT gauge, both of which seem to be stressed a lot around here. I dont have money for those yet, so I'm going to just do minor tweaks.

The reason I'm adament about doing some adjustments is that the car really, really needs some more power, especially off the line as I need to slip the clutch a lot to get the car to move off smartly, and I'm going to ruin this brand new clutch one day. That and the turbo is a bit laggy and you dont feel much until about 3000 rpms. The 2 things I'm thinking of doing are:

-Adjust the smoke screw (one on top of the LDA). From what I can tell, this will improve off the line performance and should make the turbo spool up a bit earlier.

-Governor mod. I'm going to use washers to eliminate the intermediate spring, which I'm hoping will open up the top end a little, because having an effective powerband of 3000-4000rpms sucks.

That's all I plan on doing for now until I can upgrade the exhaust and get an EGT gauge.

I got impatient and decided to mess with the smoke screw and I'm happy with the results. I turned it 3/4 of a turn in and it did pretty much what I wanted. In fact I can even chrip the tires off the line if I get too aggressive. Before it would just bog out.

Is the Westach gauge that much better than the VDO? I was planning on going with all VDO gauges, since I like the way they look, and the Westach one kinda looks dorky.

Oh and buying an EGT is half the battle. I still need to install it, and I would like to do it pre-turbine, but that would require me removing the turbo. The exhaust manifold nuts and basically all the hardware in that whole area is kinda shot, and look like it's going to be a nightmare to remove them. I could always do it post-turbo but I'd rather not.

i don't have any experience with other egt gauges, but I like the style gauge.  The probe seems extremely accurate, and jumps up to where it should be when heat is applied.

of course it does look kinda dorky... but oh well.  i'm not one for making my car estheticically pleasing:)

Well I attempted the governor mod tonight. What a friggin pain in the ass, but it's almost done. I'm having trouble figuring out how to put the throttle return spring contraption back together. I though I remembered how it went  but apparently I don't, but I'm tired so I'll delve back into it tomorrow evening after I get home from work. I hopefully wont have any problems afterwards since I didn't touch a single screw during the whole process. Putting the IP cover back on while leaving the max fuel screw in place was tricky, but not that bad. I hate working on things like this. I hate carbs for the same reason. Tons of tiny parts like springs, etc... Bah...
