Well I am so close to pulling the motor on my 88 Jetta that I can smell the soot of the better motor. I'm stuck at trying to remove the Axle 30mm nut from the front drive shaft. I have never seen such a seized nut in my life, I've heated it up, shot it with WD 40, used alot of leverage, massive torque air gun, and still nothing.
Is this nut a reverse thread type, because I broke a Breaker Bar trying to remove this nut........
Its regular threads, when you heat it up try spraying it with water after you have the nut good and red, that should break up any rust in there.
good luck
i never undo the big nut i just push the inner cv in and the drive shaft falls down... assuming you got the inner cv bolts off the tranny. and you leave the axles in and pull the engine and tranny.
This is what happened last time I removed that bolt

I had my girlfriend stepping on the brakes and me hanging off a 7 foot braker bar (yes 7 feet). I still barely got the stupid thing off. My electic impact sure couldn't get it to budge.
I usually borrow my landlord's 3/4 inch drive power bar and 1-3/16 (I think) socket to take those axle nuts off. I've broken many power bars myself. I agree with smokeydub about not having to take them completely out. I never take them out completely anymore. However, the driver's side one is tricky when you're putting the motor back in.
