I was wondering the what the specific differences were between a turbo and an NA head for a 1.6?? Would I be able to reliably use an NA head on a turbo motor assuming I put the turbo head internals in it??

The differences were that the Turbo head used sodium injected alloy instead of the standard aluminum alloy used in the NA head, and special coated exhaust valves do to the extra heat. People have used the NA head on the Turbo motors but I would install an EGT gauge and watch it like a hawk. I would also use the 1.9L metal head gasket and ARP studs

I also wanted to cut one up to see how much porting work I could do. It's kinda nice to know how thick the material your grinding out is. It sucks if you ruin a good head by making it too thin.

Oh ya thanks coke. I'm kinda new to the VW diesel scene. Just building one to put in my old Suzuki LJ80. I just dynoed it at work, 26.2 HP and 34 ft/lbs at the wheels. Factory ratings at the flywheel were 41HP and 44FT/Lbs, by the way thats an 800cc engine and Suzukis' first four stroke. I can't wait until I have the diesel in there.

Search around here on the forum, this has been discussed a couple times and it seems to be common opinion that in the early years VW used a different alloy (as coke said), but Mk2 and later were all the same casting and alloy. I believe the internals are all the same NA vs TD as well.
Welcome to the forum BTW.
I used to have one of those little 3 cylinder zukes. Gutless, unstopable in the bush, but didn't float worth a d**m

LJ80, I think you called me the other day about adding some performance to your turbo diesel in a zuk. I got a samuri here right now with rebuilt 1.9td, its got 35" tires and toyota trans and drivelines. The owner now wants me to bump it up to 180WHP and 250ft/lbs of torque. Oh and I have already chopped up up one of these heads, decent amount of room to play with, but like we were talking about, replace the manifold first, than worry about port work.

935racer, how does the 1.9td hold up? I want to swap one into a mazda b2200 or b2600 for my daily. Think I'd survive?

Exhaust valves for sure... NA # is 068 109 611 C, TD # is 068 109 611 C
I think the TD ones are impregnated with sodium to resist higher temps..
