Headgasket swap questions
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:35:02 pm »
It's headgasket time this weekend and I have a few questions that weren't answered by searching

1- What is best to clean the head/block with? Is brake cleaner safe? What about a dremel?
2- Should I remove the cam to avoid valve damage? If yes, do I need to buy anything else?
3- I heard I should tap the holes, but I've also heard if anything is in the holes the block may crack when I tighten the bolts down
4- Would it be a good idea to cut the head off 2 of the old bolts and use them as pilots?
5- Does the oil need to be drained? I know the coolant does
6- Would you use a Elring HG?
7- Any other tips?
This is a NA rabbit

Thanks
Tyler

Thanks for the response

How do you clean the cylinder bolts holes? vacumm?

The oil has less then 100 kms on it. I just swapped this engine in last weekend and as soon as I started it it started to leak coolant. It was fine when I pulled it 4 months ago.

"Remember to put some sealant on the surface of the #1 cap where
it meets the head or it will weep oil. "
I have no idea what you are talking about. Is this obvious with the head removed? Or is this iff I do the cam seal?

So you cut an X on the very bottom of the bolt, and then 2 channels down the side of it?

I'll definitly try and have fun  8)
