Yellow dot injector pump-how to tell?
« on: September 12, 2006, 09:18:02 am »
Let's say the ip on my '82 1.6na was rebuilt by a previous owner. A pump from an earlier may have been put on and the yellow dot was rubbed off.
Is there any other way to tell if it is an actual yellow dot pump or a later pump?

im not 100% sure, but maybe if you get the numbers off the pump, and call a good pump shop, they may be able to tell you the approximate year of the pump and stuff
obviously if its an 81 pump,it wouldnt be a yello dot
if it was a 79 or something,it may be
shoot i used to have a yello dot (banghead),the yello paint was all over the advance cover on the pump, and partially on the pump housing too, they slobbered it all over on the one i had
Throttle cables ftw

pardon my ignorance but what's the advantage of the "yellow dot" IP?

Don't know if there's an advantage, but they have different timing specs.

From the Haynes manual... "Two types of injection pump may be fitted, one made by Bosch or one by CAV."  You don't suppose it has something to do with this do you?  From what I can tell, the two don't look much alike, but maybe the yellow dot was a simple way to identify?

It's definitely a Bosch. There's early yellow dot and later non dot.

If the part number ends with a single letter A, it is Yellow Dot, if there is any second letter ie. AG it is not a Yellow Dot.
