Good ; better; best intercooler

Just picked up a GTD intercooler (planned to fit it somehow on my Quantum). Is there a range of preferences/ qualities/ efficiencies/ fitabilities  for standard I/C's... Is the GTD a good one in the scheme of things?

you want a counter flow inter cooler has they flow the best, which a gtd intercooler is

No, you want a crossflow cooler, counterflow coolers do not flow near as well as a crossflow, nor are they as effecient. I would say the GTD cooler is ok, better than nothing but not great by any means.

yea from the looks of the GTD intercooler setup, you'd need to be going pretty fast, or have a fan drawing air in to actually cool it. IMO

Well thanks for the opposing views
I guess what matters is the pressure drop. But I dont have the means of testing that.
actually there could be a lot of what matters; including:
1) Position/Guided air flow through.
2) internal fins
3)Does a change in direction through the intercooler create a hot spot which then cools faster?
4)Why would the VW engineers place it in the hottest((high rather than low) area of the engine bay; where it looks like a hole in the hood would be appropriate?
5) Could they have not made it a crossflow?

Well, as you want that kind of setup (above the engine and short tubes) you should get G60 intercooler (models with AC), it's a crossflow and it is mounted the same way as GTD IC...And i think it has a fan underneath it, so it sucks air trough it...

Cross flow looks like it should work better; so what were VW playing at?...
Well just done some research and turbulence is important too. Here's the intercooler sold to me as GTD:
http://img61.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imgp3559ka9.jpgThe moulded plastic ends are interesting; the two ports are isolated and the turn around end has a cleverly moulded shape that gradually squeezes the returning air into the return half. I feel that some of the custom alloy I/C's are nice examples of welding but a little boxy at the ends leading to some channels not receiving their fair share of air flow.
Does shiney alloy ends radiate more heat than black plastic?
Should pipe returning from I/C be lagged?
Is the GTD that bad for it's size? Don't a few people here use them?
?'s ?'s ?'s

Looks tidy Is there any data on the two I/C's?
Nothing wrong with your English; you should hear my Croatian
As I'm a Quantum driver; where can I site it? Where does Audi put it?

I wonder if an Mk2 can make it with a good FMIC (behind the the bigbumper air inlet for optimization  ), oil radiator, AC condensor, and of course the water radiator :!:
Is there room for all this?!

Unfortunately, I don't have any data for the two intercoolers...But I'm sure that G60 is better than GTD, because the type (crossflow)...
I speak English very well, but my gramatic is slightly bad...I'm trying to post correct...
How come that you know some Croatian?..I mean, it is not popular language, so im courious...

I bet his croatian is as good as mine!
As a matter of fact, as good as almost everyone's here.
Dig it?

Just wonder if anyone palces all those radiators at the front successfully...

I'll let you know. I plan to stuff an FMIC in my Jetta soon. And I'm not giving up my A/C.

Bigger is better?
I'm working on a friend's Quantum right now. We're doing a full engine rebuild. It's going to get a VNT along with an intercooler. I think we will go for the Saab 9000 Intercooler (huge and thin) mounted in front of the A/C condenser (yup, Mark it has A/C
). The radiator and condenser might have to move toward engine slightly to accomodate it.

First package of Quantum A/C arrived from the US today. Condensor and the dryer. Still not told the wife

"matal" :?:
Do you mean Mattel?
Over here we made our 'Q's out of metal; genuine VW German issue; none of your Airfix stuff
