Engine and tranny swap questions
« on: September 06, 2006, 05:53:46 pm »
This is a 84 rabbit with a 85 solid lifter NA diesel engine. The rabbit was always diesel.

ENGINE
1-Where is the sensor on the head that the glow plug relay gets the temp reading from? Mine goes on randomly so I think I have it hooked up wrong.
2-What's the proper advance for a 85 solid lifter IP? Mines set at 91. I lost my bentley for the mk2s but my mk1 says 84s should be between 90-100. 3-Hard starting and white smoke is incorrect timing or bad glow plug system correct?
4- Are my glow plugs and relay mixed up? (fast and slow)

TRANNY
I had a 4 speed and I put in a 5 speed. I had all the gears for a bit but I had to press down to get 1,2. I did some adjusting now 1,2 engage smoothly but 5th does not exist. There is only one linkage peice that is differant from 4-5 speeds correct? I also have the shifter mounting plate from a 5 speed installed. Is it just a matter of fiddling around with it some more or am I missing something?

BACKGROUND: forget to tighten the pump and timing shifted to ~80, I reset it and it's at 104 right now. I have brand new glow plugs, they are BOSCH and PN 100 226 173. My glow plug relay is PN 191 911 261C. I have freshly rebuilt injectors (BOSCH) installed. New fuel filter (~2000 kms) and a clean K&N air filter. I found the correct wire for my glow plug temp sensor in the engine bay and when I grounded it my relay went nuts and sounded like it was sparking. Right now I have it hooked up to the sensor on the front of the engine. My glow plugs almost never come on and when they do it is usually quite warm out. They don't come on in the cold mornings when I need them.

Thanks for any input[/b]

there are 2 sensors, one for the temperature gauge and one for the glow plug, they are both exactly the same, just use which ever wire reaches which ever sensor the best,  i'm not sure how yours is, but on mine the one for the glow plug i am pretty sure was on the passenger side head of where ever the coolant hose comes out, it's on the back of the coolant fitting nozzle thing, kinda hard to notice unless you look for it.
