If you like I can E-mail you a PDF document that explains the timing procedure for newer model (95 and up) 1.9TD's. You'll also notice that this engine uses an automatic timing belt tensioner and, when you really get into it, you'll notice the valve stems are 7mm, not 8mm as in previous diesels.

You have mail.
It's entirely possible that this isn't the original engine in the car. 1.9's have been known to fail,as you already know. Quite often the motor just gets swapped. It's also possible that just the pump and the bracket were swapped from newer model, in which case it will be a bit of a hybrid because it won't have the proper stud or rear timing belt cover to accept the automatic tensioner.
You can tell if the engine is set up for the automatic belt tensioner by the tensioner mounting stud. The automatic tensioner has a stepped mounting stud, the part that the tensioner fits over is 8mm and the part that screws into the head is 10mm. The older engines just had a straight 10mm stud.

This is what the pump pulley looks like!!!
i checked the stud and its a straight 10mm stud!! i think the other golf i have had a stud set up for the automatic tensioner (im not sure), but i used a regualr tensioner on it!!!!!
if someone could post a pic for me i could email it to them!!! the site i use doesnt work!!!!

You've got quite a hybrid there. I'm going to say that it's a 95 pump and pump mounting bracket that has been fitted with a 93-94 timing pulley. there is no way to adjust the timing other than slotting the holes or getting a proper adjustable timing pulley.

I think you've just got the early style pump.It may not be that easy to see the slots on the pump housing but I'm 100% sure they are there. My dads 95 passat comes with the old style pump so I guess there was a switch over in that model year??.Or possibly the newer style pump is 96-97??

Maybe I'm confused...
G-spec, I thought your car was an older model and you were accustomed to the old style pump, where the pump housing has slotted holes and you rotate the whole injection pump to set the timing. That appears to be the style of pump shown in the picture. The procedure for timing is the same as for a 1.6. A large diameter locking pin (an 11mm or 7/16 deep socket usually fits) is inserted into the pump pully to lock it to the bracket, this gets it close while you install the belt. After the belt is installed you pull the pin and tension the belt. Then you need to install the dial indicator in the pump head, turn the engine untiul the dial guage is at its lowest point, zero it, then turn the crank to TDC #1 and rotate the whole pump to set the timing.
The 2 piece sprocket with the slotted holes is used only on most 95 and all 96-97 cars. I'm guessing that is the style you're used to working on. On these pumps the pin locks the pump at the proper timing and the pulley floats free while the timing belt is installed and tensioned, the pulley is then tightened to lock it at the proper timing, no dial guage involved.
