i recieved a garrett turbo off a 1.6 td and i wanted to know more about it!!! i know its a good upgrade to use on the 1.9td....but i wanted to know how much boost i would be able to run safely without problems!!!!
Hey, I have a T3 from a 1.6 on my 1.9 in my '97 Jett and it works great. I have the wastegate closed and it goes up to 28psi under the right conditions. I suggest buying a rebuild kit for the turbo and overhauling it; cheap insurance for sure. EGTs aren't too high and it's intercooled so I'm sure the engine will be fine. Of course it will wear out much quicker if I just left it alone but what the heck; life is short. Also I put in a Clutchnet.com red 6 puck clutch kit because the stock one didn't hold. So make sure you've got the 1.6 exhaust manifold, and call Superior FI and get Giles to set your pump up; you will be happy I promise!!

Will i have to get giles to tune my pump? or can i do it myself???
i dont want to pay someone for something i can do myself!!!! my other diesel i tuned myself....but i wasnt running anything close to 25psi!!!!
nah you can tune it in yourself, although giles builds a mean ass pump, you can still do pretty well with out a built pump, and yeah i definetly agree, as soon as you start making any kind of power with these engines, a clutch is going to be needed, unless you can take it easy. my clutch doesn't seem to like once i get up around 20-30 psi, that's when it starts slip. but i also drive like an ass, and although i'm not constantly knocking gears, i am um spirited with its use. and i definetly agree the garrett turbos are the best out of the k24 and t3, my dads 85 td has the garrett and my car has the kkk and his turbo definetly seems much better, although mine has a very knackered compressor wheel, i still feel they are very comparable, as his car is very strong pulling under boost.
Totally! I (usually) shift the car like a heavy truck no clutch slip at all between gears but even so, the dam stock clutch would slip over 20psi. I gotta give props to the clutchnet disk; I had a bad pan leak for 1400km and it soaked the clutch and barely affected it. I spent a week burning the oil off and it's back to normal.
Well i just bought this 95 golf....i paid $200 for it!!! so for the time being ill install the turbo cause the head will be off.....but i wont start tunning until i know that it runs properly!!!
i should have it running shortly!!!
i think i will replace the clutch....i dont know how many kms on it anyways!! what should i upgrade to?? i was thinking maybe a 16v clutch? i can get one for very cheap!!! if someone could tell me what clutches i could use that would be awesome!!
thanks for the help so far!!!
I have one more question about the turbo....i need a gasket for the compressor side....where can i get one?? and anyone know what garrett turbo it is?? cause i dont know!!!!
thanks
Michal
I bought a complete rebuild kit for $78USD from gpopshop on Ebay. It was shipped right away and everything fit well; they also supply a basic rebuild kit for a little less which would probably include the seal you need. If you order from them, be sure to specify the Kit #3 dynamic seal kit. If you only want the comp. housing seal they will likely be able to supply that.
