Just bought a '91 Jetta 1.6 TD today, without rev counter. I was wondering if anyone knew what the mph/rpm is in each gear, it is a 5 speed?

Forgive me if this is a repeated question, I couldn't find anything with a search.

Aidan, go take a look at the bottom of the bellhousing on your car's trans -- you are looking for a code like "AWY" or "AGS". Then go to this website and plug in the numbers. You can build a complete gear chart from the info on that page.

Cheers! Stan

PS - There are more VW transmissions listed here. If your gearbox is one of these, just plug the numbers into the java calculator on the website I linked to above to build your gear chart.

The redline of the VW diesel is 4500rpm if you don't know it. Good to know to build a chart  :)

It will be an AWY tranny.  Top gear is .89, so at 100km/hr you will be doing around 3100rpm.

TD don't have the AWY transmission.

They normally have 3.94 + 0.75 5th, so 100km/h = 2750rpm

2750 in fourth maybe.  You can do 120 with the .75 and be spinning 3000 or so.

Has anyone found any ring gears, and such, to make these things longer legged. My ACH revs just over 3000 at 100 kph, and like 3600 at 120 kph. I'd like to find something more like TDI ratios. Any ideas?

You must have an '85 1.6 diesel.  The ACH had the .89 fifth.  Crappy, crappy crappy.  Why does VW do this to their cars?  Especially when they were putting GPs and GYs (.71 fourth) in their 1.6 non turbo diesels in the early 80s.  I have no idea what you can do about this lousy fifth gear situation.  Maybe you want to try to find a good AGS to put in your car to solve the problem.  Now if VW would only make a 5spd for their golfs and jettas with the wonderful .68 fifth gear that was in the deluxe brazillian fox.  THAT car would move on the highway!

You are correct about that tranny, it came from an 85, 1.6n/a Golf. Very good assumption!   I think that I am going to find another tranny, I just wish I could find one similar to our '99 TDI. It would be great on the highway.

I have a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit diesel (4-speed) and have always wondered what kind of RPM's that little engine is pulling as I drive down the highway... Anyone know about that tranny??? I was also thinking about doing a 5 speed swap into it... But I'd like to know if I'll be turning lower RPMs with the 5 speed than the 4 speed... Anyone think they can help???

Thanks!! :)

I like the ACN / ASF 'gas' ratios.  They are adequately tall for cruising, but I take a 10% mileage hit (seems the VW-D's like to be 'run-hard')

The AGS seems to be best of Diesel choices

I find best economy in a 4 speed, and they are available in 'tall' (e-on knob-4th- GC) or low (GP)  I get best mileage with the low ratio, but the tall ratio can preserve hearing loss
