« on: August 30, 2006, 01:09:28 am »
I am putting a 1.6TD into my 1980 truck and would like to add a tach. There is no ignition system so how would a tach be installed? Thanks

through the W terminal on the alternator.  Do a search on here, there are pictures showing where it is located.

If you don't have the alternator with the W terminal, you can also use the optical signal pickup method described here:

I've got  his kit, but I'm waiting for a friend to solder it up for me...

If the alternator is from TD, then my guess is that it has W terminal and that it is connected to fuse box...Only thing to do is to wire the fuse box and tach...
That kind of setup for tach was on my '91 ECO Golf...
Excuse me on my bad English

If you use roger's optical set up, concider putting the target wheel on the cam sprocket.

I was going to put his tach kit on when I changed my pump, but you can't tighten the pump nut(s) behind the sprocket with the target on.  And i'm not too keen on doing the pump timing, knocking off the sprocket, tightening down the pump and putting the sprocket back on.

i have to cut a new aluminum disk to fit the cam sprocket cause I had to trash the one in the kit taking it off the pump sprocket.  It won't fit the cam sprocket either as the hub diameter on the cam sprocket is bigger.

its a nice set up, but if your in the habbit of putzing with injection pump, your out of luck.

Brought it to Roger's attention, don't know if he is going to do anything about it.
