« on: August 25, 2006, 07:24:36 am »
I just bought a 1992 Volkswagen Jetta with a 1.6L TD, and i want to have as much Horspower and Torque as possible to beet my friends with their little Honda Civic's and other little gas cars. Is it possible that some day my dream will become reality. Please Help me show them that diesel are the best motors. :?:  :?:  :?:

it doesnt take much to knock down hondas and stuff, although i had a crx take me the other day, but i wasn't running fuel boost and fueling at the time, he probably still would have beat me but not as bad.  just look in the faq for how to increase power...

Thing's to consider when trying to increase the power on these motors:
- More boost.
- More fuel.
- Bigger/better injectors, or simply rebuilding them.
- Bigger fuel pump, upgraded by Giles, etc.
- Intercooler.
- Get cold air into the motor.
- Use a very good synthetic transmission oil.  Some people say Redline.
- Use a good synthetic engine oil. (yes this helps!)
- Check your compression.  If its low, fix that.
- Check timing. (very crucial)
- Consider buying a bigger downpipe + exhaust system.
- Check your bearings
- Check your alignment
- Badly worn tires?! Fix em!
- Lube up your ball joints, fix bad struts...
- Bad engine mounts can rob engine power
- Lube up your gear shifter if its sticky... nice quick shifting  8)
Now for some really advanced stuff you can do:
- Buy the stage 2 cam from passenger performance
- Get your flywheel lightened
- Rebuild + Ceramic coat EVERYTHING

I find them to be a little smoother, really there isn't much difference. I know when I put a stage 3 cam in easy e's jetta it sounded a lot like a tdi at idle.

I know I'm just harasing, you... a 1.6 @ idle is tough to determine much for smoothness.

Well your 6lb flywheel definately was not helping the smooth idle situation
I just picked up a tdi o2a and a spec stage 3 clutch that hold 450ftlbs of torque, the clutch was over twice the cash the tranny was... looks like the lightest I can get one of these g60 flywheels is around 10 lbs... Back to the lathe...

I'm currently in the process of getting an engine rebuilt.  I'm really interested in your stage 2 cam :D.

How much do you charge for lightening flywheels?

Biggest gains from the cam are for an engine that is over fueled or if you plan on adding more fuel, if your engine is completely smoke free, and you add the cam you will get some results but they will be minor.

I am not currently lightening flywheels for Passenger, I am just spinning some stuff on a buddys lathe for personal use, if I get an OK from him I will go back to putting out lightened flywheels under Passenger.
