can't get over 3000 rpm
« on: August 24, 2006, 11:24:00 pm »
I just bought a 86 jetta 1.6TD and I can't get it over 3000 RPM. It seems like the first half of the throttle movement does nothing but bog the engine. The throttle is moving fine. I think the injector pump is screwed.

Just need a few opinions

It doesn't smoke. When I first start it is white but clears up after a few seconds. Even when you accelerate it doesn't put out smoke.

Timing belt.

As far as the white smoke goes, I'd check the glow plug circuit to make sure it's heating up good at the start.

Define "bog".

What happens after half throttle.

i wonder if the cable is adjusted correctly?  With the engine off, have someone depress the pedal all the way, while you observe the pump.  See if the trottle goes all the way to the stop.  If it doesn't adjust the cable at the pump.

Verify the age/milage of the belt as well

The engine just doesn't pull until half throttle. When you step on the throttle it has a dead spot. Sounds like it is trying to go but misses. After half throttle it seems normal except won't go over 3000RPM. I tried moving the throtle by hand and it reacts the same way. I even disconnected the throttle cable. I have 2 more of these engines so I will pull the pump of off one and give it a try. I ordered a book for this last week so I should receive it soon. I have pulled the engine out of the 86 and am putting in my 92 jetta. The current engine loves oil a little to much. About 1 liter per 200km. So I'm going to change the timing belt and reseal the 86 engine and see how it goes.

Thanks
