1.6L TD..Smoking under full throttle
« on: September 22, 2004, 01:42:26 pm »
Rebuilt motor...everything else seems fine.  As previously mentioned the gas mileage is a little off (though im up too about 36mpg now). Problem is she smokes at full throttle.  At idle shes fine....no smoke at all.  But if I accelerate at full throttle...the higher the RPM the worse it gets.  Its black smoke.  Any ideas?  IVe heard that TD shouldnt smoke at full throttle.

Check your air intake and filter for obstructions.  It needs lots of air at full throttle or it will smoke.  36mpg is also too low.  It should be at least 45, and I get 50-55 always unless I am dealing with really heavy city traffic, then it goes down to 45.  With straight long distance highway driving in 5th gear I can get 55+ or 800km to a tank of diesel.

Definitely check your air filter. If you are using an aftermarket filter, and the maker uses the same filter for both the normally asthmatic diesel and the turbodiesel, you probably don't want it. The genuine VW filters for the turbodiesel have significantly more filter media surface area than the one for the normally asthmatic 1.6D.

Also, your profile doesn't say where you are from. At high altitudes, the factory standard adjustments on the pump might be delivering excessive fuel. Get all the air you can into it (correct air filter, clear all the pipes, maybe use a larger inlet pipe), and at that point, if it still smokes, you can turn the full load fueling back to match the air you are getting.

im also having a similar problem with my 1997 1.9 idi.

im in cgy (elev 3500ft), and i recently did a mufflerectomy.  kept the 2" pipe, no resonator, just cat back.

get a puff of smoke at around 4000 rpms when i rev it.

ive got a k&n knockoff filter on it that im sure is allowing more than enough air in.

recently changed the fuel filter.

thanks for any insight.

Its got a K&N filter in it in the factory air box.  All the tubing to the turbo is the factory piping.  I doubt theres any real obstruction in the air flow.  Ill add my intercooler setup and go from there. Oh...and im from southeastern NY....bout an hour outside NYC.

Put a boost gauge on it and see if the wastegate is working properly.
