Seized Intermediate Shaft

The subject sais it all. 94 golf diesel - ready to scrap, but ...

Engine on car ... shaft not broken can withdraw it.

I know the shaft drives the oil pump.

Question: can I unseize the thing without removing the engine?

It is possible to change the intermediate shaft and bearings with the engine in the car. You need to remove the front engine mount and unbolt the front crossmember to allow the engine to drop low enough to pull out the I-shaft. You can then remove the pan, drive the old bearings in until they drop out and drive new ones in, being careful to line up the oil holes. The bearings are available form any "clevite" dealer, part number SH-1209S. I'm pretty sure carquest can get them.

 If the shaft seized it probably broke the timing belt, in which case you'll need to pull the head and repair the valves/lifters, might be worthwhile to pull the whole engine. If you do scrap it you should place an ad here, 1.9TD's are in demand in any condition. Dr Diesel will surely buy it... :D

these were for my int shaft brarings in my 84 td
i had fun doing it in the car,i knocked the plug in the block into the bellhousing
long story,and basically it was parts places fault for their crappy bearings,but these worked like a dream
they were like 9 bux or something,i have a spare set,i bought 2 lemme know if you cant find em ill sell them to ya
