Starter fitment for AAZ 1.9
« on: June 10, 2024, 04:53:38 pm »
Thanks for adding me to the group.
I have a Grumman Kubvan which originally had a 1.6 NA and automatic transmission (010?)
I am swapping out to an AAZ 1.9 which was out of a manual car.
The automatic trans bolts up the AAZ fine but the starter won't fit as the turbo return lines on the AAZ get in the way.
We tried a starter for a gas engine and it fits but does not have enough power to turn the AAZ fast enough to start.
Anyone have any suggestions?  I am considering fitting a manual trans but would prefer to keep the Kubbie interior as stock as possible.
I've seen some mid to late 80s vanagons had AAZs and automatics??
Any guidance for this newbie is appreciated!

What a dilemma, Sorry I can't even think what to do on this one.  The stock starter for diesel not working and the smaller gas one is underpowered.  What's a guy to do?  Push starting is out of the question too as it is an automatic, not a manual.

Not sure what starter you are using.
If it's the starter that came with the AAZ, it's probably already one of the skinny ones.

I wonder if one of the small MK4 TDI starters would fit.

Got any pictures of the starter you are using?
Must only be an inch or so too long right?

I saw a guy on Marketplace that had a ton of starters.  If I can find that again I will link to it and you can contact him directly.
