Help w cam ID
« on: January 27, 2024, 02:40:27 pm »
Im trying to get a positive ID on a cam I have that doesnt look like 1.6 or AAZ. Its marked '028F' which indicates mk3...could it be AHU?

Ive taken measurements and the #1 lobe is .2mm shorter than the NOS cam which is good and the groove at the oil seal is still minor. The profiles (when lining up timing slots) appear to be identical but this one is missing the oil groove on #1 journal that the AAZ has but 1.6 does not.

In terms of markings, all my 1.6 cams are very similar to each other and same for AAZ but this one is differnt.

The cam with the green tape is 1.6TD, the dull gray one in the middle is AAZ and the mystery one. Ive taken all closeup photos with the mystery cam in the foreground.

in my experience they all have had 3 numbers and a letter which indicates the end of the vw part number like XXX XXX 028F or it may indicate 028 xxx xxxf. there is a thread on here somewhere that has a bunch of the numbers listed. i used it to id my cam which says 028D. google sucks these days so i can't find it again.

So its an AHU/ALH cam...looks like the profile is quite close to AAZ but with longer durations...has anyone tried these on AAZ? Or 1.6? Its really getting hard to find low km cams...I have maybe a dozen 1.6 cams and all fairly significant lobe wear and ghe grooves cut by the oil seal are pretty substantial as well.
