Need Help Identifying Engine Type
« on: December 27, 2023, 02:38:43 pm »
I have a 1981 VW Rabbit Truck LX, but due to comments made in a previous post, I may have an engine other than a 1.6L.

I have looked at stamps on head and block, but I'm not able to make sense of what they mean via the internet.  I'm hoping that someone here can help with that.

Below is an overall view of the engine.  (Be kind, I haven't had it long).

Next are pics of stamps on head.

The next 2 pics are identifying features on block.

The last pic is of the installed air breather vent.  When I search on the part number, ebay wants to sell me a breather valve for a VW Golf Jetta 1.8.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm thinking 1.9 head on a 1.6 block: frankenengine.
I really don't know much about the 1.9 IDI heads or block.
The part number without a letter behind it confuses me.
I usually think of a 373 with no letter as being a 1.5 head, but I don't think that's the case here.

Does the PCV puck on top have 2 ports or three? including the one going into the cover.

The 1.9 head lowers the compression because of the large prechambers.
Which can mean hard starts when it's cold but it breathes better once running,
because I think the valves and intake passageways are bigger.
 Good engine to turbo.

Putting the camera behind the engine and taking some pictures of the casting will let us know for sure if it's a 1.6D

I just discovered something that will help with determining the engine type.  I went to close the hood and this caught my eye.

So my question has changed to what vehicle should I use when buying engine parts?  I was thinking maybe the 93 Golf with 1.9L Turbocharged engine.

What would be the hp for this engine and what does ECO mean?

That might be a 1.6 NA pump.
Still not sure it's an AAZ block,.. maybe just the head.
The AAZ might have a block code flat spot just under injectors 3 and 4.

Combo Motor.  A little of this one a touch of that one.  And the cool part is that it still runs.

A 1Y is basically an AAZ.  Does the oil return, if it had a turbo (edit), go into the pan or the block?  i seem to remember that the 1Y was different in that way from an AAZ.

i thought 1y never came with a turbo? i dont think that spot in the block is drilled and tapped.

the only difference i know is the 1y has longer rods, and different pistons with a higher wrist pin. other wise they are the same with the same bore and stroke.

From what I can tell its an AAZ/1y head with a 1.6 block but its hard to tell, if its AAZ someone capped the crankcase vent beside the vac pump. That could be an incomplete 'J' on the end of the part number on the head. The block stamp should be just below the head in front of cyl #3.

Were ECO injectors 155bar? I guess would check that pump and injectors match.

I believe the only downside of running the 1.9 head on 1.6 block are the larger prechamber volumes which would lower compression somewhat.

FYI I think 1Y motors also had smaller wrist pins than their AAZ counterparts.

"someone capped the crankcase vent beside the vac pump"
 Good eye.

Second from last picture in the first set.
What is that hole in the block just above that cap?
 That doesn't look 1.6D.

RabbitJockey, you are right about the turbo of course and i always learn something new in your posts. After i originally posted that i am certain i went back and edited it with something about "if they came with turbos" and never checked back. At least that is my story and i am sticking to it. D'oh!

im with you on that story.

i dont think thats a hole above the breather, i think thats just how the later aaz/1y/tdi 058 tall blocks are shaped. thats definitely a 1.9 block based off of that, on a 1.6 the engine code spot is almost right up against the deck of the block

ok, that's not a hole.
just a low spot where some of the black paint survived.
Not there on the 1.6.
