Water pump replacement pitted surface
« on: September 16, 2023, 12:07:01 pm »
So im ready to install the new water pump on my 85 jetta 1.6 NA but the o-ring surface on the block is pitted, should i put a thin layer of permatex no2 on the surface or use something else. Also do any of the bolts that hold down the water pump go into the water jacket and need sealent( Again should i use permatex no2) or are they all dry and dont need any.

Is there any way to get a wire wheel on a drill in there and clean up the pitted surface before you apply the sealant?  There are many different-sized wire wheels and one that could get in the grooves would be best.  I would slap some Permatex in there if I were you.

As far as I know, the bolts holding the pump on just go into the block and don't need to have sealant.  But I would put some anti seize on the bolts in case you need to take it off again in the distant future.

Best of luck.

Yeah i already hit it with a wire wheel then a file then some sandpaper. So its clean and smooth its pitted a bit. Alright ill use some sealent on the flange and use anti sieze on the bolts. Just wanted to make sure as it was a nightmare to change this water pump so i dont want to be having to retake it all back apart because of a small mistake.

Filling the pits with JB Weld and sanding that smooth is a good solution,  but that will take longer.

I ended up coating the whole flange in a medium layer of permatex, that combined with the o ring seal and it should seal HOPEFULLY.

Seems like I forget to put the "T" bolt in (for the timing belt cover) before putting the water pump back on.

The upper timing belt cover bolts to it.
So pretty important.
