my 1990 jetta turbo diesel is almost impossible to start out on a hill .it will bog for a bit 30 sec then take off and operate like normal. but it is intermitant prob 75% of the time any Ideas?

Its probably the turbo spooling up, you will notice that around 1500 rpm it will bog for a bit. My suggestion is to downshift. Higher rpm's climbing that hill, but you will get less smoke and less EGT's.

My jetta is hard to start out on a hill as well. Gotta give 1st gear a good spin shifting at around 3k rpm when normally I only do around 2k.

I guess it could be retarded timing as well?

I am not talking about lack of power at the high rpm I am talking about a very noticable lag when releasing the clutch in first gear . Retarded timing could be the problem if it was all the time but it is intermitant .
I mean a little scary when you go to start out through the intersection and you got the wife and kid in the car and it will barely move especially if it is on abit of a hill ,Ihope I explained it a little better this time .

Does it produce alot of black smoke when it's not accelerating properly? Any differant noises when it happens etc?

you'll either have to do some mods, or slip the clutch a bit more when going up inclines. My car hesitates too, and if the person behind me doesn't like it they can switch lanes.

About the lack of power. You will see better power at the higher rpm range when the turbo is spooled up. Before its spooled up, its more of a restriction and can cause your car to 'lag'

I have found out what is causing my lack of power and its my a/c .I have noticed it is normal when off . silly me :roll:
