Idle increases ever so slightly on 1985 vw golf
« on: June 04, 2023, 09:00:03 am »
So the 1.6 idi engine has well over 300k miles by now. The injection pump was a resealed unit from 8 valves of fury purchased in 2012 and still dosnt leak. Now occasionally the idle increases very slightly then returns to normal. Could the pump be just plain worn out?

Could be it just needs a little tap.  Of the pressure regulator on the front of the pump, next to the fuel inlet.  The internal pressure might be low after all those years.  You can check the output at the return line to the tank.  I think it is something like one liter in one minute at 1,000 RPM.  If you don't get that volume then tap the regulator down ever so slightly and measure again.

Setting the internal pressure correctly has a lot to do with the advance of the timing piston and response to higher RPM later.

Someone verify my numbers as it has been ages since I used them.

Are you seeing any white smoke?
It's been running fine and this just started?
Have you had the injectors worked on?
 Got clear fuel lines?

I just replaced the injector hard lines Sunday because  the old ones were leaking  at the fittings for 5 years. The injectors were brand new Bosch India units 5 years ago and probably 60k on them since.
