1.6 TD cam question
« on: July 02, 2021, 10:56:46 am »
I was getting ready to set cam timing after replacing the seals and like whoa...
Feels like I'm going down the VW rabbit hole....
Looks like the cam timing tool got forgotten in at some point, and the engine turned over....
All the pieces were laying down in the pocket, couldn't go anywhere else thankfully.

When I dropped the oil pan there was no metal in it at all so it all appears have been contained.

It wasn't a fresh break as the broken end of the cam was obviously oil soaked.
Since the PO bought a running Jetta and just did the engine swap into the Sammy, it has been running like this for some years.

There's enough of the slot left in the end of the cam to position it for timing purposes, but do I really want to run this cam?
If I replace it, will I be able to find shims? Are there other diesel cam options that are recommended?
