1.5l Alternator/IP guard bracket
« on: August 20, 2020, 05:15:00 pm »
Hello

I have a 1.5l 068.2 in a sailboat and would like to relocate the alternator from the intake & exhaust side of the engine, to the fuel side. I researched the vag diagrams and forums here and it seemed like the one I purchased would fit, but low and behold, it doesnt. The new alternator bracket crashes into the IP guard/bracket, near the bolt hole shown in the last photo.

Is reconciling this as straightforward as swapping a guard bracket from a different engine? Presumably a 1.6?

The new bracket on left, old non alt bracket on right:

Here you can see the mounting bolts through the pump housing, the upper left hole was vacant when I took it apart. Seem strange to anyone else? Also, the conflicting guard location can be seen to the left as the area rubbed free of paint:

And here you can see the conflicting part more closely:

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Oh, just want to clarify further, the jog in the upper portion of the new bracket is what hits the bolt location on the ip guard.  : )

It would be considerate if you resized the pics so that others can see them without scrolling.

 In after the resize, ha.

 Looks like a MK2 bracket.
It will work with a 1.6 injection pump bracket.
Yeah, that 1.5 injection pump bracket only mates with the 1.5 stuff.

Looks like your boat engine doesn't use the passenger side motor mount like the Rabbit.
Actually not sure of that.
Is your injection pump bracket also used as a motor mount?
If it isn't you could use an injection pump bracket from a MK2.
There is also a small bracket that links them.
Maybe get them from the same person who sold you the alternator/AC bracket.

Thanks fatmobile!

Thats exactly the info I needed. It is indeed a mk2 bracket, and I think the reason I was having trouble finding it is that my engine doesnt use the passenger side front motor mount, so when I would see 'motor mount' categories in the vag diagrams I would bypass them. One look though, and low and behold there are the part numbers to start figuring it out. : )

Do you think there would be any issue if I simply use a hacksaw and file to remove the tab on the injection pump bracket? Im assuming I would need to either do the same to the metal timing belt cover, or find one from a mk2 as well. Im intrigued by the small bracket you mention that links them also though. Do you know what parts precisely it connects?

Ill do some research on the mk2 IP bracket and connection bracket and let you know what I find.

Thanks a ton for the help!

The small L-shaped  bracket connects the injection pump bracket to the alternator bracket.
Not pictured but there is a threaded hole in the top of the Mk2 Bracket.
 Where are you located?

It seems like the Mk2 upper timing belt cover clips to a metal shield that bolts on before the injection pump.
so you'd have to get that too.
I'm not sure the Mk1 lower timing belt cover will match the MK2 upper.
That's probably the hardest part to find,..
a good lower timing belt cover MK1 or MK2.

You could cut off the part that interferes.
That bolt hole is only there to bolt to the alternator bracket,..
oh yeah, it probably supports the upper timing belt cover too.
