tdi life expectancy?

not exactly performance oriented..  but hopefully some owners can share their experience.

How long should a well maintained VW TDI engine last?
I've looked at a couple in the 150,000 mile range.  Will they be good for another 100K?  200K?   :?:

Thanks!

my mechanic friend bought a used 1999  with 270,000mi/400,000k..the car was highway driven, but the piston rings needed changing out( that is why it was sold) ..car was maintained only to the VW specs/9,000-10,000mile oil change.

I have driven a few in the 300k miles range, one 400k miles, I have taken a couple apart for clogged intakes/cylinder heads and no visual wear in the cylinders at those miles...they seem to last a VERY long time, however some people have bad luck and turbos die, timing belts fail, etc.

Heads always need rebuilding by 300-400k miles (guides, seals etc) but pistons and rings okay still. Way more durable then older VW diesels, I would say very similar to Benz diesel in quality now. Maintenace is key and a careful owner for long life. They are turbo charged...

My wife's '00 Jetta TDI has ~287k on the clock and runs like a top (better than my '98 NB TDI with less than 1/2 that mileage...).

We bought it from the original owner and it was used to make ~150mi daily round trips across the interstate for commuting.

Properly maintained, I don't see why they couldn't easily go 600k mi.

There's a guy from San Francisco on the TDIClub forums with a white Golf TDI with something like 700k mi.  I met him at last year's TDI Fest - heck of a nice guy and the car was absolutely flawless.

'98 VW NB TDI - not stock by any means, but still pretty tame.  TDI-M candidate
