Author Topic: power steering pump mounting. differences between gas & (Read 2921 times)

I'm trying to mount up my power steering pump, from what I can tell I need a spacer between the pump and pulley, but I cant figure out if the bracket or the pulley itself is different. Anyone have experience with this?

I can tell you from experience its a bit of a PITA trying to get the PS pump + bracket on. If there was an easier way I would love to know for next time.. (assuming there is going to be a next time :lol:)

Are you swapping PS pumps with a gasser?

imo power steering is extremely unnecessary for mk1 and mk2 cars, unless ur handicapped or something

true that. I hate PS. just another way to rob HP from an already low hp engine!

No, just lazy, and I do a lot of paralell parking in tight spaces. I've actually not had power steering on this car since I got it (pump was no good), and I think it sucks. Besides power steering only robs power when you're actually turning.

I used a P/S pump from a gas model, stole the bracket too. I have noticed my pulley is slightly out of line, barely noticable other than the fact it chews up belts.

Actually thanks for the reply. I wasnt sure if I could use the gasser's brackets. There IS however a spacer that's supposed to go inbetween the pump and the pulley for the diesel, and that's probably why yours is a little out of alignment.

the ps pump is like a hydraulic pump. It will build to a certain pressure and once that pressure is realized, a valve opens so that the pressure doesnt go any higher. It does rob hp even when not turning, even if only a very very small amount. (also hurts the revvability)

Reason I say this is because I have experience with both. PS is nice, but I would prefer not to have it. Just another thing to break right? :lol:
(i had a high pres p/s line break on an audi 5k... 400 dollar dealer hose. luckily i found one at the wreckers!)

Try paralell parking on some of these tiny NYC streets into a spot about 3 inches larger than your car

. Its like this, move 3 inches, turn wheel full lock, move another 3 inches in the other direction, turn wheel full lock again, repeat...
