my friend and I took my car out and did a 0-100kmh run (17.5 secs)....we then took off the air filter and air box (yes ran no filter) and ran another run (16.5 secs!) a whole second was made up by doing this!!! so we thought "how we could make this performance with the air filter"...we thought new air box? scoop? but in the end we drilled out about 15 holes in the air box. you get a WAY better, meaner sound to the engine, and its a bit faster (not like when theres no filter, but id say its worth it, even if you just get that sound (my top speed went up 20Kmh too)

Well, that's one way to do it, but you're sucking hot air into the engine. That won't be the best, especially from a stop.

I replaced the snorkel with a 3" thin wall PVC pipe and ran a 3" duct back to the rain gutter. It's a "cowl induction" setup, and it seems to work pretty good for me. A little louder than stock, but probably not as loud as your swiss cheese version.

Also, the K&N filter or a genuine VW filter for the turbo diesel engine flows better than the stock paper filter for the normally asthmatic diesel.

A guy here has an A2 with the same engine as you do (the car was originally a 1.8 8 Valves).

He ran 20.4 seconds for the 0-60mph.

He had lots of weight in the rear though (400 lb).

Did you change the exaust pipe?

If you put on which is bigger in diameter, it won't hurt I'm sure.

My "drilled" airbox
« Reply #5 on: October 28, 2004, 06:01:44 pm »
I decided to drill my airbox and install a K&N panel filter, but I didnt want the airbox getting filled with crap so I did this

I used some hole saws and a hacksaw blade to make the hole, trimmed the hole with a scalpel, then fitted the aluminium body repair mesh in the box and stuck it to the inside with black silicon, I also removed the front intake tube from inside the box and meshed the front of the box.
