I seem to recall reading somewhere that one can buy a short-throw shifter...I think it was Neuspeed. But I was was reading this thread on the TDi Forum, and got to wondering if any of you guys have done something like this on your early Rabbit/Golfs? I have driven my new Rabbit around the homestead a bit, and am shocked at how long the throw is on the shifter. The 2-3 shift throw must be 18"... :shock:

Okay, I searched Neuspeed's site and found this short-shift kit for $200. To get maximum benefit they also recommend this shifter rod for $70 more dollars. :shock:

I think I'll use their pics as inspiration to modify the stock linkage. :twisted:

I'd still like to hear from anyone who has done their own...

BTW, $free$ is a quality which overcomes many shortcomings... :wink:

To offer another option, Techtonics http://techtonicstuning.com/ makes one, (deluxe shift kit, A1 5-speed, pn: 798.210) for $70.00. I have it for the Rocco, not installed though.

It is very high quality, welds are nice and it's chrome plated. Making one is cool too, I just dont have the resources.

this guy also has shift linkage kits. and he used to lurk on this site.

i made my own with greasable spherical bearing rod ends and greaseable bronze bushings on the pivots. 99% of play gone.

We did almost the same thing on my Son's '87 Scirroco 16v. But to add mass to the link arm we just passed a stack of washers (3/8" I think) over the rod and then tack welded them in place, no cutting required

Thanks for the suggestions and links, guys. Since I have an extra shifter linkage, I'm going to do a DIY short-shifter...
