• I picked up some for a good price from Canadian Tire,  it is a API  CI-4/ CH4, CG-4, CF4, CF.... etc,    I read a few posts and they say this is the good oil,   I also bought a bosch replacement oil filter and chucking the orange fram oil filter into the garbage.

• I use it, and yeah I just picked up a bunch while it was on sale at Crappy Tire.
  
  I do remember at one point someone warned against mixing it with other oils. I hate to be vague, but I do remember a post about that here. Couldn't find it with a search.

  as for oil i have been using synthetic castrol gtx for the last year and now im wondering, is that a good idea?

  Ther is a reason Fram milters weigh half as much as the more expensive ones.  Cut one open, and you will see.

• I heard the fram filters break down and the paper filter get's into your oil.   So much for filtering your oil........

• Also... some of the Fram's don't have the "drainback" valve that the Mann/Mahle/Bosch filters normally have to help maintain oil pressure during startup.  I'd imagine the VW engineers put that in there for a reason.
  
  Another interesting tidbit... since VW/Audi found the "sludging" problem on the 1.8T engines, they've now spec'd the larger diesel oil filter in its place for all "north-south" 1.8T's.  Imagine my surprise when I went to order a filter for my 2000 A4 and I got the same reference as the filter for the 83 TD!
  
  Anyway, not sure if they did that to slightly increase oil capacity or perhaps due to that filter's specific qualities, but to me that means that those filters are a trusted OEM part.   The references I have are:  Bosch 72174, Mann 940/25 (OEM) or Mahle OC264.   Please correct me if I'm wrong.
  
  Sometimes you can find them by the case on ebay or from other suppliers.

• Yep... I think I pay around the same price in US $.   Anyone else notice the strange "fixture" on the bottom of some of these filters?  A dealer tech told me that there's some special "T" tool that fits into that to help twist off the filter.  I hadn't seen that before.

• so what exactly would be the best synthetic oil to use in a 1.6TD?  i've been using castol gtx for the last year now, don't seem to have any problems due to it, but ill be doing an oil change this week and would like to know which oil will be the best for my car.

• I know that they've talked about this at length over at the TDIClub boards.  I think one guy even had samples of his oil sent out a specific intervals for "proof".  You might check there.
  
  I have had good luck with the Mobil 1 synthetic for diesels (I think it says something on it about Truck/SUV, available at WallyMart), but friends use other brands as well.  Sorry I can't be of more help.  
  
  The whole synthetic vs. dino oil debate rages on in some circles, but despite the rumors about leaks and grumbles about the increased cost of synth, most people agree that it's better for an engine.

• alright so i guess it'll be okay to use castrol gtx 10W-30 one more time before the colder weather comes in. thanks.
