transmission question
« on: July 30, 2006, 10:01:00 am »
I got a 4 speed transmission from a jetta, and i put it in my 1981 diesel rabbit car that was origionally a 5 speed, and i put a new clutch in it too.  I got everything back together, started it up and the thing grinded real bad inside the bell housing, and i opened the thing in the top of the bell housing and a bunch of aluminum shavings came out.  I used the fly wheel that was originally on the rabbit car,  also the clutch petal is really hard to push down.  any ideas? did i use the wrong trans?

The code on the trans that came out was: FF 16010
The code on the trans i put it was : GC11129

You are going to hate a GC trany hooked up to a diesel. You'll be screaming just to go 65mph.
It will bolt right up though, shouldn't be any aluminum grinding off due to the swap if done correctly.

Do you think an FN transmission out of a rabbit GTI will work?

It will definitly bolt up.
Check out gear ratios here, www.scirocco.org/gears
You'll want one like a 4S, AGS, FO etc. Basically one with a 0.75 5th. I have a 4 speed on my rabbit and am removing it ASAP. It makes the car's acceleration so much slower and it's pretty loud on the highway. Mine is a 4A so highway speeds aren't that bad

If you do keep the 4 speed, you need the 4 speed shifter linkages, otherwise a linkage will pop off and you'll only have 2nd and 4th. Ask me how I know  :(

The FN trans has a 0.71 5th gear.  Think this will be too doggish on the highway??

I just remebered that I had heard that there is an error on that chart regarding the FF and FN. Apparently they don't have the same ratios.

I hope the 0.71 isn't too bad on the highway as I plan on installing one this weekend. At least with a 5 speed you can downshift at highway speeds

i have an ff and i feel the gearing is very well matched to the car, sometimes gears could be lower, but it's not big deal.

So anyways i bought a FN transmission off of ebay thinking i was getting a great deal by paying 160 dollars for it, as oppossed to the junkyard (parts place in auburn hills) who wanted four hundred dollars.  But i got f**ked over on the deal, there were bolts broke off in the trans, and he had a 100mm drive shaft flange on one side??? I need to change it back to 90mm and i also need to replace that seal, where can i find one of those seals at???

pythonparts.com perhaps? if you need another tranny I'll sell you one of mine (I think I have 5) for $100. I even have one that came from a diesel
