K26 break down

Well I picke up an ok turbo a few days ago, and decided to take her apart, to learn more about them and how I'm going to go about repairing this turbo.....

I have taken the aluminum housing off the intake and the turbine looks great,  so then I tackled the exhaust side of the turbo, and have all the bolts off, but I can't seperate the damn iron housing......

I prob have to use some penetrationg fluid and some muscle....

Also after I get the iron housing off, how do I remove the impellers,  there is a bolt on the intake impeller side, if I remove this first then  I think I can pull the exhaust impeller out with it's shaft....  I am unsure of how this works   (I'll try to find some info on google)

have you seen this thread?

http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1841&highlight=turbo

for my k24:
I had to use a torch on the exhaust side, heated up a short secion of the outer housing, around underneath the joint area to a dull red, then it just pulled off easy.  (oxy-acetalene torch)

Undo the nut on the intake side, then heat the wheel gently (propane or maybe a heat gun) to get it uniformly hot, until the oil starts to smoke, then turn it over and tap the housing on a can that is filled with rags, the wheel should fall into can.

next undo the bolts and remove the aluminum plate.  Under it you will find the seals, a spacer, thrust bearing, another spacer then a snap ring, take it out and the intake side bearing should slide out.

At this point all that is holding the shaft in is carbon and the grip of the exhaust side seals in the exhaust bearing.  it took a couple days soaking in carb cleaner (acetone) and periodic wiggling before mine was loose enough  that a gentle tap got it out.

See thread above for more.  I have some more pix of mine coming apart if it helps.

when i was taking the exhaustside from my gt20v, tooked all the bolts out, i even hitted it, i just don't came off.

the trick was hitting with a copper hamer, but a whole time going in circels.
You need to watch very good it dont come of crooked/curved, it realy need to come off straight. if it come off crooked/curved you better hit it.
I find its not a simple job.

heat and penatreating oil our your friends here.. i broke a holset h1c turbo that was perfect by forcing the turbine section with out heat.. what i did that was bad besides the heat part was putting a metal rod in the oil drain of the center section for leverage and twisting ..snap i broke the oil drain flange on a 45 degree angle ..that sucked as that turbo was still mint..i never let my self down from that  ha and that was about 5 yrs ago..so don't pry on the center section ha and use alot of heat and pentrating oil and like benijman says use a hammer on the turbine  in circles gently..with the heat it should go easy..
best of luck that always suck unless they are brand new ha..
