replace 90 jetta tdi with 86 diesel ??
« on: July 21, 2006, 05:37:45 pm »
I melted a piston in my JEtta Tdi recently. Ive been looking around for another turbo engine, but thats been hard to find. A guy at the wreckers says I can buy his 1986 Jetta non-turbo diesel as a replacement for my broken 1991 and fit it with my working turbo head. Is this even possible?

Cheers,

Edit: oops wrong thread , sorry

its possible, but may not last.  Search for 'oil squirters' and you will find lots of discusisons of the differences between turbo and NA.

Tons of threads on turboing a non-turbo engine.  Consensus seems to be not the greatest idea...   check for canada, as they seem to have lots of them.

I don't think that TDI parts interchange with any of the older 1.6 liter stuff, so if you have a TDI, having an '86 NA engine probably won't even work to swap parts.  However, I didn't think they made TDI's in 1991.  It's probably just the regular turbo 1.6 I would think

Yes they will bolt up. You can try to keep the turbo but the engine may not last very long.
As previously mentioned you probably have an IDI engine not the TDI.

Well, he did write it "Tdi" in his first post; I've seen that used to refer to "Turbodiesel" before.

people say it's not the greatest idea, but i've heard of people not having any problems with it, and the only reason people say it's bad is because of the oil squirters, which really are debatable as to how useful they are,  the only motor i have seen have trouble with a turbo is an 11mm engine, and that's for obvious reasons.  but at the same time that guy has a vnt caddy, n/a motor, and a td vanagon with an n/a motor, and hasn't had trouble with either, but he doesn't have his all fueled up and stuff...
