Its a 95 TD, engine had a full rebuild done this past winter due to variable valve timing problem!
the car only overheats on the highway...and the temp will rise to 100 or 110 degrees depending how fast i drive!!! in the city it cools down to about 75-80!!!! it has a new waterpump, thermostat and the switch that comes out of the front of the head!!!!
i have flushed the rad, the rad gets hot all the way to the fan switch!! fans turn on when needed!!!!
help me out.....or is this normal....but it would never do that....it would always sit at 90 degrees!!
another thing that might have something with this is that the guages stopped working for some stupid reason i never found....but i got soem guages from my buddy and they seem to work fine!!! i have another set that i bought and im still waiting for!!! i will try that set....but i dont think thats the problem!!!!!
please help!!!!
thanks
Michal

Hate to say it but it could be your gauges. My father in law had the guage cluster replaced in his 95, and now the temperature gauge is all over the map. The local VW gurus said it's because of sendr/gauge incompatibility.
It's a possibility!
Maybe try a cheapie generic gauge temporarily, just to verify?

the motor does make a lot of heat. Does your car have A/C? I had a lot of dirt, etc fused between the condensor and the rad. City driving was fine temp wise, but highway skyrocketed. Hill climbing the temp rose quite quickly too. I haven't been able to really drive the car much since cleaning it off, but pretty soon I'll be back in business
your best bet is to get an infrared thermometer and place it on the rad just to see what kind of temp is coming off of it. 75-80C? if you're getting that in city driving... you must have a low temp thermostat, or the gauge is wrong. What kind of thermostat did you replace with? 87C? Those are recommended.

Turn off the ac and you will see the temp gauge drop... i have the same problem. I do 120k with my ac on its fine but once i step it up to 130-140 with the ac on the temp gauge starts to move after about 20 seconds. Then when i turn off the ac wow it goes down lol. I take it that it puts to much strain on the motor lol. I do not have the orginal rad either.... i have a aftermarket one for the car the orginal one went at 317000kms and im at 37800kms and still going lol

At high RPM, the lower radiator hose can collapse from the suction from the water pump. Especially if you have a defective coolant resevoir cap that does not allow the system to get up to pressure.
I've also seen belts slip without making a loud squealing noise and without making the alternator light flicker, so check that too.
