Glow plug fusible link on firewall
« on: September 15, 2004, 04:06:12 pm »
Hey guys

This morning my car took longer to start than normal. When I got home, I checked that little fusible link that is on the firewall and found that it was broken. I was wondering if I could use a small piece of brass shim stock  instead because it's the only metal I have which is really thin. Would this work or should I get the proper fuse.

Thanks

You should get the right fuse for it.. It cost a few coins at the stealer..

When the fusible link broke on my car, I moved the wire over to the other side's terminal ( not a recommended longterm fix  ) until I got a new one and a spare at my local VW specialty parts haus.

Thank for the responses guys. I put a small piece of .010 brass shim stock on yesterday and the problem was fixed. I'll go to the dealership next week some time and pick up a few proper fuses.

This fuse being blown may be an indication of a bad glowplug. Just keep this in mind if it starts harder than usual when cold.

The fuse wasn't blown, it just broke in half. It was corroded which probably weakened it, so I think that's why it broke.

Make sure you've got washers between the glow plug fuse and it's hold-down bolts.  Otherwise when you tighten the hold-down bolt, it twists the thin delicate fuse material, which can cause it to crack.

I got washers between the bolts and the fuse. I sanded the washers as well, because they were corroded, to make sure there was a good connection.
