I am new to diesels, having just bought my first (1986 1.6NA Golf). A co-worker whose brainwashing I owe my purchase to is a diehard VW diesel fan. He has been running a mix of used hydraulic oil and diesel for the past three weeks with no problems and no extra visible smoke. He gets the oil from our waste oil tank at work. It would be an unspecified blend of 10W Allison C3 compatible oil and 15W50 diesel motor oil. He strains it through a cheesecloth, and mixes it at a ratio of 2/3 waste oil and 1/3 diesel fuel. He says his fuel costs are down to 33 cents a litre (labour is free). Note that our waste oil would only rarely have more than 8-10 hours running time on it, so it barely qualifies as waste.
