94 1.9 td exhaust question

I recently aquired a 94 golf 1.9 td. The exhaust has been hacked and fixed a couple of times. I want to run a straight 2.25 or 2.5" pipe from the turbo and eliminate the two mufflers. Do I need a resonator or a staright though muffler? Will this help fuel economy. Theres also a small can -like oblect inline after the turbo that is stamped VW. The guy I took it to yesterday said to leave it there and add the pipe after. I noticed that this part of the pipe is 2.25" and then when it hits the first muffler it gets smaller?
?? this doesn't seem right to me. Can someone chime in here. I didn't think diesels needed back pressure. I thought the better the flow through the better period. I'm still learning....
Help please.
Out.

FWIW, my muffler crapped out last month... I put in a straight pipe. Sounds really nice; a bit deeper and not too loud. Don't know about gas mileage... I run SVO so it's hard to track mileage. My EGT is down a bit though.

Will this help even on a NA engine? And it won't affect inspection correct?

No, a NA would be way to lout without a muffler. On a turbocharged car, the turbo dampens a lot of the noise.

Did 1.9TDs come with cats? If so I'm guessing the small can like pipe is the catalytic converter.
You can straight pipe it no problem. If you find it too loud, put a small resonator near the front.

Quebec have emission tests?
It so... u need the cat
i will mod mine so i can plug the cat in when i need too... the only thing is the noise problem... the engine is super loud already...don't want to increase anymore sounds. Maybe a resonator would help with the sound?

ive got 2.25 cat back on my 97 idi
not too loud, and i havent noticed an increase in power, or in fuel economy
only thing i save was the cost of the muffler
if i had to do it again, id try 2.5 or even 2.75
