new rear springs
« on: July 07, 2006, 09:09:54 pm »
Everyone here with an a2 knows what I'm talking about. You put 3 or 4 people in your it, or u put some stuff in the trunk. And your car looks like it's takin a ***, it goes down the road with the front wheels harldy on the ground. Well she no longer squats in the rear. Someone on here put longer springs out of a passet in their car. So I got a set of b3 passet springs on vortex for 36 bucks shipped. I put them in tonight. I wasn't expecting it to be so high but I like it.

Any sugestions on what to do to lift up the front??

Before

After

Let me know what you thing. I know most of you lower your cars, and that is my plan with the a1 I have. The a2 is the car I have to use every day now, and with 3 people it sat way to low to use, so I fixed the problem.

i got those "cargo springs" from parts place for my a2(it was my dads,so i know the history)
as it is,this a2 always sat real low ,even up front, but after 10 years,it did sag some in the back, now, its slightly raked+can carry weight with the cargo springs,my dad said (thumbs up)
i like the rake,id like to do this to my rabbit for the drags(id make upa set of struts i could swap in before id  go to the track
but it does look a little too much probablyfor most folks, but us hillfolks like crazy stuff
Throttle cables ftw

I'm the guy that did it, mine looks about the same. If you decide it's too much, take it apart again and cut some off the top of the spring. Try a 1/2 coil at a time. it will still be stiffer than stock even at the factory hieght because it's a heavier diameter wire.

As fr the front, a cheap "quick fix" is a set of the twist in rubber spring boosters you can get a Canadian tire. I'd bet there's another spring that will do the same to the front you just did to the back, but it might be tough to find. There's a lot more options for the front from the factory than there ever was for the back! Check it out, different fronts depending on 2 door, 4 door, air conditioning, automatic, etc. You might find  a factory mk 2 spring that will do what you want.

I like the height of the back how it is. I might have the car sold, so I wont be lifting the front. But if it isn't sold I will deffentaly look into lifting up the front.

I did notice going down hills around corners the back end wants to kick out if your not carefull.

I would imagine so. For a few reasons. You've shifted weight off the rear which would reduce traction, plus you have increased the spring rate making it bounce a bit more when unloaded.

Make sure to aim your headlights!

FWIW, I cured my sagging arse by adding an extra set of lower spring perches when I put in new struts. In my old A2 Jetta, I had 3 sets of perches... was a bit tough to bolt back together but it made the rear stiffer without adding too much height.

I put new rear boge shocks on the Rabbit but 2500 miles later they were junk.
I think it's because the old springs were weak and the rear sagged too low when loaded with a few cans (20 gallons) of vegetable oil:

So I put new shocks and some Audi 4000 springs (and lower seats) on the Fatmobile:

This picture was taken on the way back from 10,000 lakes Festival so I was only carrying about 4 gallons of vegy but the car was packed with camping gear.
I think centurion gave me the idea. It rides great especially when loaded. Not a stiff ride. Rides a little high when empty :D .
Oh yeah, being up so high, it leaned real bad when turning so I put the 16V, rear anti-sway bar on. It just dives into the corners now.

Fatmobile: Audi 4000 springs just in the rear or all around? Did you do anything to the front?

I just swapped the rear springs.
The front struts and springs are from my pickup.

The green 92 (1.9TD 5 speed) has '93 passat springs in the back with about 1/2 coil cut off, about 300 lbs in the trunk, 15" BBS with 195/60R 15's. Will probably cut another 1/2 coil off next time I have something apart.

The grey 92 (1.6TD 5 speed) has chevette front springs in the back, factory bottlecaps with 185/60R14's.
Ride on the grey car is MUCH nicer, but the green one corners better and is a LOT more fun to drive!
