1.9 NA tuning
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:19:28 pm »
Hi,

I'm pretty much a complete newbie when it comes to diesel tuning and have recently been temporarily 'forced' into making a 1997 1.9 NA diesel golf my daily driver while I copmplete a 'big' engine rebuild on my regular petrol (sorry) impreza (sorry!) which is an area I'm pretty well clued up in.

Anyways I'd REALLY like to make the golf 'less slow' which I'm well aware is all it's ever gonna be given its distinct lack of a turbo.

I've spent acouple of hours reading though this forum and it's seems I may be able to make some performance imporvements by a couple of fuel pump modifications:

1) Govenor mod as detailed here (http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2300).

2) Fuel Advance mod - mentioned in several threads but not yet found and specific details.

3) Max fuel adjustment - mentioned in several threads but not yet found and specific details.

Am I right in my direction here? Is there anything I've misses and am I actually going to see any real world difference or am I just wasting my time??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,

dr_jones

Yeah I had the same problem when I first arrived. Maybe we need a sticky that covers the common and FAQ power mods.  :P

Anyhoo, I only know where the max fuel screw is on A1 cars (pre-'85) so I'm afraid I'm not much help with your 1997. But I can tell you that advancing the timing as far as you reasonably can helped my '82 a lot. Too far, though, and you melt engine bits so be careful.

Cheers guys - yeah a sticky on the FAQ section covering NA engines would be nice.

TBH chucking the turbo bits n bobs  might end up being a route I take if I can source them cheaply enough from the scrappers. First though I'd really like to see if anything can be done to improve the stock NA and make it a little more liveable with....

Aww no 1.9NA love :(

I'd be interested in your intake manifold for mine if you decide to go turbo.
