Mandrel Questions
« on: June 28, 2006, 09:44:24 am »
So a guy on a local VW forum is arranging a group purchase of stainless mandrel bends. I have no idea what I need out of the list nor how to put them together, but at the discount prices I can't resist.
I know lots of welders, can the average joe handle this type of work? How do I make sure I get the proper shape? Do I need any special flange or anything to mate to my engine? Any input appreciated.

Here's the list:
304 stainless u-bends 23 plus shipping in 2.5
304 stainless 90's 19 plus shipping
304 stainless 45's 19 plus shipping
'86 Golf 1.6l na diesel (hit & run victim)
'90 Golf GTI 1.8 8v SOLD
'84 1.6 td Rabbit

From someone who has built a ton of stuff out of that pre-bent stuff, just buy U-bends they are far more universal. Proper shape and where it goes is just trial and error, after a few try's you will start to get the hang of it. As far as the stainless goes... Well I hope your a decent welder, 1/16th stick will probably be your best bet, as most wire for stainless is fluxcore and doesnt like thin stuff. If you have a Tig that is the easiest and best, but few people do. Good luck.

The other thing you can do is cut it and tape it all where you want it to go and then take it to your local welding shop and have them weld it for you.

As far as mateing it to your engine it depends what you are building, if it is an intake or exhaust manifold then you will need a flange that matchs you intake or exhaust, if it is for a downpipe then you will need the flange that bolts to the turbo you are using.
The Brett of the board...

Here's a link to the thread:

It would be for a 1.6 non-turbo, so what pieces would I require?
Anyone local want to build it for me?
