1.9TD misfires what to do

hello gurus,
i have a 1.9TD with a pump from the early 93 passat w/o the ldr - not sure if that means anything.
my car also runs on vegitable oil but he problems happens when running both fuels.
on idle it misfires and the rpm drom about 25-50 rpm's. it has not staulled yet but can this problem cause a staull while driving?
i ran 2 bottles of "Diesel Purge" and nothing.
next i will try to remove the banjo's on the feed and return to see if anything is blocking there. on another forum i was told there is a "gauze" under the feed banjo for IP protection.. if the gauze it clean what else can be the problme.
i am pretty sure the nozzles/injectors have never been changed. the engine ran great before this issue. when the ip was repared and we had to remove the valve cover to set TDC the can and surrounding area was super shiny. very clean , no sign of wear.
would changing the nozzles to high performance one help this issue or do i have to change or clean the injectors.
is there anything that can cause a misfire?

Does the misfire go away when the cold advance handle is pulled out? If it does, the injection pump timing needs to be advanced. If the timing won't stay set after adjustments check the crank pulley.

the misfire improves slightly when the advance is pulled.
what seems to help is when on veggie and i have my injection line heater off. the actually reduces the veggie heat from aprox 250F (before the injector) to 160'sh before the IP. not sure if this means anything.
another point is should mention is that 2 weeks ago i got my timing readjusted by ear/feel not with a guage. is this the real problem? if so what should the setting be at?
i tend to drive higher on the rpm range. i noticed that the rpm of the engine is slow to drop to 1000'sh rpm - which is the idle rpm.
which direction should i take?

The pump timing needs to be adjusted properly. Best performance and economy seem to be at 0.95-1.00mm.

Yes, it probably will. Timing a diesel by ear is tricky, if the engine was very hot when it was timed it probably got set up a bit too retarded.

thanks QuickTD that is exactly what happened. i will be on the look out to find a shot with dial to correct the issue.
do u this this is a serious enough issue to staull the motor while on the highway?
can u suggest a book that explains in laymans terms about the diesel engine and the details about the ve pumps. i have been driving vw for the past 10 years and never had any type of IP issue - now they are happening left, right and center.
thanks for all your help.
