I'm buying a 1.6td engine for my A2 from dealer in Canada (north bay, ON to be specific). I need to figure out how to ship this thing from them to my place (or work) in NY. Is there any shipping companies I should check out?

can you get one locally from a dealer in NY?
why the north bay dealer vs. one in sarnia or close to the border?
personally i'd just drive it back from a dealer around the border... wouldn't be far.
i know that there are some companies that will ship an engine but i don't know of any off the top of my head. it would be too heavy for greyhound.
if you do a search for shipping an engine in some automotive forums you can probably get a list of names and make some calls.

The 1.6 TD is very hard to come by in the US. I mean, I could get a rebuilt engine for $2000 from somewhere here, but that dosent even include everything else I'll need. Just a bare longblock.

The only place I found them to be available is in Canada.

north bay is a hike...
even if you don't pick it up in person and have it shipped... shipping from a dealer just on this side of the cdn border, like sarnia or windsor, would be cheaper. i know that this comes up now and then over at vwvortex.com, you could try searching over there. good luck with it

Day and Ross shipping is pretty cheap unless you have it brought over the border. You might just consider having it shipped to a close Canadian depot and then going to pick it up.

If your supplier is willing to wrap it and strap it to a pallet, then any freight forwarding company will do the rest. I havent crossed borders, but I have had various boxes and pallets shipped within Canada. Its cheapest if it is warehouse to warehouse, but most will pick up and drop off as well.

I dont have a company to recommend, but You could do this:

and call around. or you could call your local freight company and ask them who would do the delivery if you shipped something the other way.

Hopefully you will be going against the general flow of goods, you will pay far less. Your going to pay mainly for the space the pallet takes up, so shipping 2 engines wont cost much more than one. Let us know what works and the cost, it comes up all the time.

Well, it seems like the hurdle to overcome is customs and the EPA. I all but gave up when someone from the place I'm buying the engine from offered to give me a hand and handle everything for me. So I'm back in business and will be enojoying diesel sounds from my jetta soon.

Use Forward Air.

I ship all over North America with them.

They will take care of customs stuff too.

The only drawback is it must be dropped off at their terminal.and picked up at one too.You can use a regular trucking company to get it to the terminals.Most of their terminals are at major airports.

I had a VW engine shipped from north carolina to colorado via forward air, $300 or so I believe. I had to go the airport to pick it up, but other than that it was great.

Well forunately it's already been handled by the shipper and it just cleared customs today. So I should have it pretty soon. I'm very excited
