What should I do???
« on: June 11, 2006, 11:22:09 am »
I was wondering who has the most powerful diesel? I have a 97 Jetta 1.9Td. I only have a K&N airfilter which i like because i can here the turbo whistle with it lol  Im about to install my oil pressure gauge, oil temp, boost, and egt gauge. I want to install a front mount intercooler. I plan on getting a custom done Giles pump within the next year. I have not been able to decide on what size exhaust i want to go with. Whether i should go with 2.5" or 3"? I plan on putting a muffler but just have not decided on the size yet... would 2.5" be good or would 3" be to loud? My car is my daily driver. It has 373500kms on it so i dont want a car that is going to kill me with exhaust noise. 8)  I might install a bigger turbo that will replace my small k03 turbo that i got  But meh i dont mind it. I just want more power so i can eat those little hondas that are in my town that rev there engine when you are sitting beside them at the lights   But hey that day will come soon when they get a big surprise of black smoke and me smiling at the next likes when they sit even lower in there seats becuase of the embarassment that they just got literly SMOKED by a diesel!  lol anyways if anyone has any ideas or advice for me just let me know... open to all ideas! Happy smokin boys :D

The straight pipe idea could work, but adding a muffler will help with the noise, and deter cops.

Definetly a bigger turbo and a Giles Pump,  I think Smokeydub's car is rockin now with that pump and new injectors, because he's running a Duramax Turbo

Intercooler is great, I noticed a huge difference on the same crazy diesel above with an intercooler, I believe anywhere from 8 - 15 degrees, and you can even cool it further by spraying the cooler.

As for the clutch, not sure what you could use for a 1.9, I'm starting to build up a 1.6 T motor, and will be getting the 16 V pressure plate, 210 mm flywheel(lightened/balanced), and 6 puck clutch...

Bushings for you shifter, unless it's cable driven then I think your fine.

Fresh rebuild or a ring and bearing refresh....

Search the forms, and your find alot, ask a question and everyone is more than happy to answer them...

88 Jetta 1.6 NA (Dead/Crushed)
92 Jetta 1.6 T (Sleepin)

don't play with the fueling until you get an intercooler, you will kill the engine.  Might want to hold out on hte pump for now, i pushed 191torque and 141 hp (-%17 to get corrected spec) with the stock pump, upped fueling, 2.5" straight pipe, 1.6 fuel pin, k&n, tdi intercooler, 20psi boost, lightened flywheel.

thanks guys for the reply.... is 2.5" straight pipe really loud? Is a front mouted intercooler or a tdi intercooler better?

straight pipe: turbo quiets it down a lot... depends what you consider loud, or a nice rumble.

front mount :)

There is no point in putting a muffler on a 1.9TD. I have a 97 Jetta just like yours VWpod. I have run a cat back 2.25" stainless straight pipe for several years now. There is essentially little or no noise difference compared to the factory exhaust plus it weighs much less. Anyone who hears my car run doesn't usually believe that I have an open exhaust (except for the cat) until they get down and look.

Your best hp mods price wise probably are putting an intercooler on and then start fooling with your fueling. Exhaust wise, going bigger than a 2.25" or 2.5" is a waste, look at the size of the outlet of the stock turbo and you'll quickly understand why.
In the mean time get your boost cranked up to about 13# or so, adjust your fueling, get a better aneroid pin and you'll gain 5-10% right there without spending much money. Your motor is starting to get a bit long in the tooth so, you probably should'nt go hog wild just yet.

QuickTD knows as much as anyone here what the best order of steps would be.

His car is quicker than most and you would never know it until you see under the hood or he left you sitting there in a heads up race.
